Healthy Skin Habits To Start Today + Why Consistency is the Key to Glowing Skin

Want to know my #1 beauty tip for creating glowing skin and long-lasting results? The answer might surprise you. For true skin health and wellness, the secret isn’t expensive spa treatments or following a complicated 10-step protocol. It’s actually far more simple than that. The truth is that if I could give just one key word of advice when it comes to caring for your skin, it would be: consistency.


Why is consistent action so important for skincare? Think of it this way: your skin is a super dynamic organ. The skin is hard at work 24/7/365, and it’s in a constant state of change. Fluctuation. Regeneration. Transformation. These functions are all part of a day in the life of your skin. Therefore, it only makes sense that we need to give our skin a consistent level of care, in order to best support this nonstop performance. Consistency is also key to seeing and feeling the results you desire from your skincare products and routine. Happy, healthy, skin is absolutely possible with persistent everyday action. Sporadic effort unfortunately tends to yield disappointing or limited results, but building good daily habits will reap consistent rewards and allow you to truly see a positive change in your skin. Achieving these habitual goals will improve your complexion, your attitude, and your life:

  • Drink an adequate amount of water. Pro Tip from my dear friend, Beverly Hills facialist, Darienne Arnold: “Take your body weight in pounds and divide that by two to get the number of ounces of water you should drink per day. Add an ounce for every ounce of coffee or alcohol you drink. For example, a 140-pound person should drink 70 ounces of water daily.” I couldn’t agree more. Drinking an adequate amount of water daily is so important because it helps to hydrate the skin from within, keeping it looking healthy, radiant, and plump.

  • Protect your investment in your skin. Every. Single. Day. While I do hope you’re consistent with every step of your routine, skipping your SPF is not an option. It is estimated that 90% of visible skin aging - including fine lines and wrinkles, uneven pigment, rough skin texture and loss of skin elasticity - is caused by sun exposure, so you will want to always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher during the day. Also be sure to re-apply every two hours that you will be in the sun and immediately following swimming or excessive sweating.

  • Get your beauty rest. Adequate sleep is critical to proper skin regeneration. Strive for between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night.

  • Eat healthy & balanced. Because your skin is a reflection of your overall health and wellness, dietary distress can be quick to show up in your complexion. The skin loves fresh fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and lots of water. Consume these things in a healthy balance and your skin will thank you.

  • Make moisture a priority. Always moisturize your face and body after washing them. Applying moisturizer on freshly cleansed, slightly damp skin is my favorite trick to help really lock in moisture. Regardless of your skin type, healthy skin is hydrated skin, so make it a goal to incorporate this into your regular routine.

  • Keep it clean. Fresh, clean skin is fundamental in keeping breakouts, buildup and premature aging at bay. Cleanse your face daily before bedtime to remove pollutants, dirt, excess oils, dead skin cells, sunscreen, makeup and more.

  • Get regular exercise. You don’t have to be a gym bunny to get good skin. That said, regular movement helps improve circulation to the skin and stimulate the lymphatic system for natural detoxification. Even a brisk ten-minute walk each day can make a difference.

  • Use high-quality skincare products. Because topical skincare is like nutrition for your skin, we want to be choosing well-curated beauty formulas that are rich in active ingredients, antioxidants and other skin supporting components. Be sure to invest in products that prioritize these things over pretty packaging and competitive price points.

  • Use lukewarm water to wash your face and body. This one is super simple but I promise it makes a difference. Water that is too hot can irritate the skin and strip it of vital moisture. Lukewarm is best for effectively cleansing, while still supporting your skin’s natural barrier.

  • Don’t touch your face. It may seem like a no-brainer but this one is an easy mistake to make. As much as possible, avoid touching your face, unless you are applying cosmetics or caring for your skin with clean hands. Anything else is likely to spread bacteria and other unwanted debris amongst your pores.


Other Things to Know Skincare is a journey and the goal should always be progress over perfection. While building good habits will greatly improve your skin health and your complexion for the long term, it’s okay to take things one step at a time. By setting small daily goals and being patient with the bigger picture, you can allow yourself to be set up for more success and less stress. Once you’ve zeroed in on what works, the best thing you can do to support your skin is keep showing up for it. Strive to create daily rituals that make your skincare routine feel special and you’ll never be tempted to skip it. With time and a little consistency, you’ll be well on your way to happy, healthy skin that glows.
